Problem Solving:Overview
How To Manage
Switched LANs
More and more companies are now replacing older 10 MB/sec Ethernet systems with faster,
switched alternatives. But while these solutions offer greater flexibility they need careful
management in order to ensure optimum performance. Concluding our two part article.

D
ifferent switches have different
features and are better suited to
some tasks than others. Some
switch designs lend themselves to a
high speed backbone in a box type of
use, whereas others may be designed
with the intent of micro segmentation.
There are several techniques of switched
implementation the final choice will
depend on the application, the existing
resources and the desired end result.
Collapsed Backbone
A high speed switch can be used as a
collapsed backbone, as shown in Figure
3. Each router is being used to isolate
segment traffic from other segments.
Connecting all of the routers to a shared
medium, even a high speed medium,

demands on the backbone increase. Di
rectly connecting the routers to each
other would be effective, but is poten
tially more expensive and is not scalable.
Providing that the routers are only
routing traffic and not bridging, the
backbone switch in this scenario may
be a single MAC (Module Address
Card) device. However, if the routers
are bridging traffic, the backbone
switch must be multi MAC and have
an address table large enough to buffer
the addresses of all the devices that
may propagate bridged traffic. If the
switch is a single MAC device it should
only be connected to either the work
group routers or resources that are
shared by the entire enterprise network,
such as external routers or file servers.
